I was excited to receive a bottle of Tamanu Oil to try because I have been on a quest for the best anti-aging products out there. This oil, from the brand Apteka Natural, is a 100% certified organic and unrefined oil made from the nuts of a tree that grows in Southeast Asia. The primary use of this product is to heal skin and give it a healthy and young looking appearance. The Apteka Naturel website states that the oil “is employed by Polynesian women for promoting healthy, clear, blemish-free skin and could help clear acne and fade acne scars in those who have a dry, chapped facial skin type.” It also claims that Tamanu Oil can be used to treat burns, wound infections, abscesses and other topical ailments. Directions for use simply include gently rubbing the product into the desired areas.
PROS: Although I am only 24, I am seeing wrinkles and fine lines developing (too much sun worshipping, I suppose). As a solutions-driven person, I am determined to make them disappear! I loved the fact that this oil is completely natural and organic, and the description made it seem like it has the potential to be very effective.
I used this product diligently every night for just under two weeks. I applied it to the areas I felt needed it most, directly below my eyes and on my cuticles. The under-eye area has always been a challenge for me and is subject to dryness in winter and pesky fine lines. My cuticles are perpetually dry and peeling and they can always use a little TLC.
The product does a wonderful job sealing in moisture wherever you apply it. It also sinks into the skin nicely and does not become an oily mess that gets all over your pillows. It absorbs within minutes and softens and hydrates the area in which it is applied.
Also, I have extremely sensitive skin. Many products that I try result in a reaction of sorts; typically tiny bumps on my cheeks. The Tamanu Oil did not bother or irritate my skin in the least. On the contrary, it felt soothing, and I had zero adverse reaction, which is promising for anyone with sensitive skin.
CONS: I don’t think it is wise to expect any product to be a miracle worker, because no one substance is going to cure your skin concerns completely. With that being said, after my time using the product, I did not see a decrease in my fine lines. If there was a decrease, it was not noticeable to the naked eye.
I also tried this oil on the ends of my hair, right after a shower when it was still wet. I never got a chance to blow-dry, so I’m not sure how it would turn out if I did; but without blow-drying, the oil creates a stiff, straw-like feeling. It is definitely not a product you want to apply to your hair and leave in if you aren’t planning on styling or washing it again before you go out.
A note about the packaging; this product is difficult to transport. There is a way to close off the dispenser (similar to how you would shut a soap dispenser), but I couldn’t figure out how to close it without squirting out tons of oil to do it! Also, you barely need to press down the dispenser to get all that you need. You compress it maybe a centimeter and oil comes flowing out. Otherwise, the packaging is fairly standard.
For what it does, the price seems a bit high at $42.
SUGGESTIONS: Although I did not try it, I believe this oil would do wonders for dry chapped feet. Simply rub the product in, and put on a sock directly after. Sleep with the socks on all night and I bet your feet would thank you in the morning!
