It’s easy to look chic this spring while still keeping within your budget. Joanna Douglas, Yahoo! Shine’s senior fashion and beauty editor, shares her list of the styles we’ll be seeing on the fashion-obsessed…as well as a few looks that should be put into hibernation.
PEDAL TO THE METAL
Holographic materials and metallics—from silver and gold to colored metallics like pink purple and blue—are big style news. “I’m seeing lots of mirrored sunglasses, silver pumps, iridescent clutches—it’s very trendy, playful and fun,” says Douglas. Little touches go a long way: “A rose gold skinny belt or glistening flat sandals will spice up your wardrobe.” The holographic trend has made its way to finger tips, so trade last year’s glitter polish for high-shine metallic colors and dual-tone lacquers that change in the light.
Floral prints (specifically small and extra-large floral prints) are going to be everywhere, from jeans to tops to dresses. Speaking of which, dresses are back, especially ‘90s style babydolls and also fit-and-flare skater-style dresses, which are very feminine and flattering.
“Sporty” is the new chic, as baseball hats with a fashionable flair are the hot accessory. Madewell’s floral baseball hat sold out immediately, and leather baseball hats are the new rage. Further, a cool sweatshirt isspring’s biggest clothing must-have. “They were all over the spring and fall runways, and I think this relates to the baseball trend in making streetwear upscale,” says Douglas. These are not your bulky, grimy sweats—instead they are dressed-up sweatshirts with floral prints, lace, graphic designs, or even just a gorgeous color are unexpected and cool.
BLACK & WHITE
An absence of color is the big story for spring, as crisp black and white take center stage. “We’ll see lots of bold graphic prints, stripes, and color-blocking with these polar shades. This trend is going to see explode very quickly so jump on board now with a black and white dress and pair it with tights and boots till it warms up,” says Douglas.
